In the summer of 2008 multiple Grammy award winning jazz artist Wynton Marsalis and his quintet teamed-up with French accordionist Richard Galliano at the annual Jazz in Marciac festival in Southern France to pay tribute to the late jazz legends Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf.
Richard Galliano, a renowned French-born accordionist who has collaborated with musicians including Chet Baker, Ron Carter and Charlie Haden. Hailed as an extremely versatile musician who is able to masterfully navigate many musical contexts and genres, Galliano is the recipient of the prestigious Academie du Jazz Django Reinhardt Prize awarded annually to the best French musician.

“Louis,” a silent film directed by Dan Pritzker and starring Jackie Earle Haley, Shanti Lowry and Anthony Coleman, will premiere in US cities in late August with live musical accompaniment by Wynton Marsalis, renowned pianist Cecile Licad and a 10-piece all-star jazz ensemble, including Sherman Irby, Victor Goines, Marcus Printup, Ted Nash, Kurt Bacher, Vincent Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, Dan Nimmer, Carlos Henriquez, Ali Jackson, and conductor Andy Farber. Marsalis will play a score comprised primarily of his own compositions. Licad will play the music of 19th century American composer L.M. Gottschalk.

Three high school jazz bands took top honors last night in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 15th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. Each band was chosen by a panel of judges composed of distinguished jazz musicians and historians - Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Artistic Director WYNTON MARSALIS; composer, conductor, and Ellington authority DAVID BERGER; leading Mary Lou Williams scholar TED BUEHRER; legendary jazz saxophonist and composer/arranger JIMMY HEATH; and bassist and educator RODNEY WHITAKER- from among the 15 finalist bands that came to the Competition & Festival in New York City.

Jazz at Lincoln Center will welcome the 15 finalist bands and the winning community band to prestigious 15th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions, and more during a three-day Competition & Festival in New York City. The three top-placing bands will perform with Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis as guest soloist, followed by a performance of the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, whose members serve as mentors for the finalist bands throughout the weekend. The Festival’s finale is an awards ceremony honoring outstanding soloists, sections, and the top three bands. The Competition & Festival is the culmination of the annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program (EE). EE also includes regional festivals, curriculum resources, a summer Band Director Academy, monthly newsletters, and more.

The Berliner Philharmoniker and the 15 musicians of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra join forces for the premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ new work, receiving first concert performances at the Philharmonie on June 9th and 10th coupled with Stravinsky’s Petrushka. The score will then form the basis of a new dance work, choreographed by Rhys Martin and performed by 170 Berlin schoolchildren at the Arena Berlin in Treptow on June 12th and 13th. This is the latest in an annual series of community projects under the orchestra’s Zukunft@BPhil program, launched in 2002 with Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, subject of a documentary entitled Rhythm is It and released on DVD (Boomtown Media).
