His speech embodies the lessons I share with my students every year. As we travel the road less traveled we must remember to have courage “to sing our own unique song.” Wynton’s speech shares the importance of this and reminds us to have the courage to follow our bliss with integrity and commitment. Wynton Marsalis is the Artistic Director at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Wynton sent over a fabulous jazz curriculum to use with my students. In addition, he sent over autographed books and CD’s last spring when my students raised funds for the Friends of the Coltrane Home. I must again thank Joanna Massey from Jazz at Lincoln Center for believing in me and understanding my vision and mission. I have been a fan of Wynton Marsalis for 25 years. My respect for him as a trumpeter, composer, statesman, musician… person… knows no bounds. If I were to try to name the “best” musician of all time, how could I compare Paco De Lucia and Stevie Ray Vaughan and Mozart and Louis Armstrong and a thousand others? I guess I would name Mr. Marsalis.

I was never particularly a fan of Mr. Nelson, but that has changed, thanks to this album.

That’s what I think, and It Ain’t Nobody’s Business If I Do.

I agree! Your speech was one of the best parts of the ceremony (second only to when all hell broke lose with the storm) even in its abbreviated form, and I’d love to hear the whole thing.

President Obama not only talked about jazz but, more important, about being a good father. I hope Wynton actually watched this video (since I’m sure it was posted on this site by someone else) because I have heard that he has several children but has never been married. I realize that its a personal choice but given that 8 out of 10 African-American children in the U.S. are now born to unwed mothers and struggle with violence, crime, high dropout and poverty, I hope Wynton is not only a great musician but also a great father, which is far more important in my opinion.

Mr. Marsalis:

Thanks for bringing Jazz music to the White House. The mellow sound of jazz is a relaxing encounter for a place that is the heartbeat of this counry.

Is that Jazz Sawyer from San Francisco,standing behind you and President Obama in these last two pictures? If so, the last time that I saw Jazz, he was around 10 years old.

Keep on making those mello sounds of greatness.
