New York, NY (February 23, 2010), Jazz at Lincoln Center and Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis announces the 2010-11 season programming featuring concerts, education events, broadcasts, touring and a diverse line-up of guest artists (see attached chronology). This season - Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 24th season of programming and seventh season in its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall - the organization announces two new series: the Visionary Voices series featuring Bobby McFerrin, Dianne Reeves and Sweet Honey In The Rock and the Jazz & Popular Song series, curated by Michael Feinstein.

Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC ) and The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs are pleased to collaborate for a fifth year on The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad. JALC is now accepting band applications for the 2009-2010 program.
American music groups from throughout the United States specializing in jazz, urban/hip hop and other American roots music including bluegrass, blues, Cajun, country, gospel and zydeco are invited to apply for the opportunity to travel abroad, particularly to countries not frequently visited by American musicians, to increase cross-cultural understanding.

Three high school jazz bands took top honors on Sunday Night, May 10, in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 14th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. Each band was chosen by a panel of judges composed of distinguished jazz musicians and historians — WYNTON MARSALIS, Jazz at Lincoln Center Artistic Director; composer, conductor and Ellington authority DAVID BERGER; educator, clinician and pianist, REGINALD THOMAS; and legendary jazz trumpeter and composer/arranger, GERALD WILSON— from among the 15 finalist bands from the U.S. and Canada that came to the Competition & Festival in New York City…

Jazz at Lincoln Center announces the 15 finalist bands for its prestigious 14th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival (May 2009). The bands will compete and participate in workshops, jam sessions and more, during the three-day competition and festival in New York City. The top-placing bands perform with Wynton Marsalis, as guest soloist, followed by a performance by the 15-piece Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra - all of whom serve as mentors for the finalist bands throughout the weekend. The festival culminates with an awards ceremony honoring outstanding soloists, sections and the top three bands. The Competition & Festival is the culmination of the annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Program (EE), which also includes regional festivals, curriculum resources, a summer Band Director Academy, monthly newsletters and more…

Two high school jazz bands from Seattle took home the top honors in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 13th Annual Essentially Ellington competition that culminated with a Saturday night concert where they performed with Wynton Marsalis as guest soloist.
Wynton presented the first-place trophy to Scott Brown, director of the Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, during the awards ceremony and concert at Avery Fisher Hall. Seattle’s Garfield High School Jazz Band took second place, but it boasted the winner of the Outstanding Soloist Award in clarinetist and tenor saxophonist Carl Majeau. The third-place trophy went to the Sun Prairie High School Jazz Band from Wisconsin.

On May 28, 2008, at 7:30 PM, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual Spring Gala concert, themed “Spring Swing,” features the soulful vocals of jazz chanteuse Patti Austin, with special guest Wynton Marsalis, performing selections from her 2008 GRAMMY - award winning album Avant Gershwin. A festive dinner (9:30 PM) will be held throughout Frederick P. Rose Hall venues following the concert. Proceeds from the evening will benefit Jazz at Lincoln Center’. On April 24, 25 & 26, 2008, at Rose Theater, in a special concert event called Tap Meets Flamenco, Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez performs his work De Cadi a New Orleans with his flamenco ensemble and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra also performs selections from The Vitoria Suite, which the city of Vitoria, Spain commissioned Wynton Marsalis to write and “Evolution of the Groove” featuring drummer Herlin Riley.
Featuring guests Israel Suarez, tap dancers Jared Grimes, Dewitt Fleming, Jr. and flamenco dancer Tomasito, Tap Meets Flamenco explores jazz, Spanish rhythms and dance. More info about tickets on Jalc.org
