Wynton and JALC honor Albert Murray

On June 3, 2007, Wynton with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Jazz at Lincoln Center will be hosting a reception for Albert Murray and honoring him with the 2007 W.E.B. Du Bois Medal, for outstanding contributions to African and African American culture awarded annually by the faculty of the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University.

Wynton will be receiving the Lewis Rudin Medal

On May 23, Wynton will be honered with the Lewis Rudin Medal for Public Service at the 25th Anniversary Award Dinner of Coro New York Leadership Center.
Since 2002, the Coro New York Leadership Center has bestowed the Lewis Rudin Medal for Civic Leadership on individuals who share Coro’s commitment to promoting civic participation and who have made outstanding contributions to civic life in the five boroughs. The event will take place at 6:00 pm at Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers at Pier 61 (23rd Street and West Side Highway).

Wynton received an honorary doctorate at NYU Commencement

On May 10, Wynton received an honorary doctorate during 2007 New York University commencement ceremonies in Washington Square Park, in New York City. The event was NYU’s 175th commencement celebrating the graduation of approximately 15,000 members of the Class of 2007.

Wynton to be featured at NYU’s 175th Commencement

Updated: Wynton is going to be featured at New York University’s 175th Commencement Exercises, which will be held Thursday, May 10th, in Washington Square Park.
He will offer the “Response on Behalf of the Honorary Degree Recipients,” an NYU tradition. Wynton will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts degree, honoris causa, at the ceremony.

Wynton receives The Jim Henson Community Honor

The Jim Henson Company has selected the honorees for the 2006 Jim Henson Honors, the annual program established in 2005 that acknowledges organizations, individuals or products that reflect the core values and philosophy of Jim Henson and the company he founded. The four recipients were announced today by Brian Henson and Lisa Henson, co-CEOs of The Jim Henson Company.

The 2006 Jim Henson Honorees:
* The Jim Henson Celebration Honor - Al Gore, Former Vice President;
* The Jim Henson Community Honor - Wynton Marsalis, Jazz Musician;
* The Jim Henson Creativity Honor - Hayao Miyazaki, Writer and Director of Animation;
* The Jim Henson Technology Honor - Google Earth, Internet Satellite and Map.

The Community Honor acknowledges an individual, organization or product who/which has increased goodwill or made a positive impact in a specific community or around the world. Using jazz music to celebrate New Orleans while honoring its rich heritage, Mr. Marsalis has dedicated himself to raising awareness of and provided hope to those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Drum Major Institute to honor Wynton Marsalis

On June 22, Wynton will be honored with the 2006 Drum Major for Justice Award.
The event is organized by the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy and will take place in New York, on June 22, at Lotus (409 West 14th Street).

Wynton to Receive Honorary Juilliard Doctorates

Seven honorary doctorates will be presented at Juilliard’s 101st commencement ceremony, which officially ends the School’s centennial season, on Friday, May 26, in Alice Tully Hall. Receiving the degrees will be composer Milton Babbitt; dancer/choreographer Pina Bausch; theater director and outgoing Richard Rodgers Director of the Drama Division, Michael Kahn; violinist Robert Mann; Wynton Marsalis, who will be the commencement speaker; Juilliard trustee Elizabeth McCormack; and philanthropist Martin E. Segal.
