The Barbican Announces Jazz at Lincoln Center Residency: United in Swing 2010

The Barbican is proud to announce the details of its first International Residency Series. The partnership with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis along with a stellar group of JALC musicians offers audiences at the Barbican and in East London the opportunity to experience some of the best big band music in the world, played by a selection of Americas finest jazz musicians. This major concert series is augmented by a programme of Creative Learning in London schools and at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, organised by the Barbican/Guildhall School Creative Learning Division in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center. This includes workshops, masterclasses, professional development and a keynote address by Wynton Marsalis.  There will also be performances in a variety of East London partner venues including a swing dance evening at Stoke Newington Town Hall, jam sessions at the Vortex in Dalston, and a special family concert at Hackney Empire.

Abu Dhabi Festival 2010 to feature Middle East debut of Wynton Marsalis

The Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation (ADMAF) today announced that Wynton Marsalis will make his debut in the Arab World as part of the Abu Dhabi Festival 2010. The nine time Grammy Award winner will join one of the strongest line ups the festival has ever offered when he performs on 5th April at Emirates Palace, adding a new flavor to this two week manifestation of world class performances in traditional and classical music, drama, fine arts, and ballet.

ASO’s performance of Blues Symphony to be broadcast on Monday, January 18th

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will perform the 18th annual musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, “A King Celebration” on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. The performance, commemorating the life and work of the celebrated civil rights leader, will take place in the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel of Morehouse College, the alma mater of Dr. King. The program will feature movements II, III, IV, V and VI of Wynton Marsalis’s Blues Symphony; Part I of Slavery Documents by Donald Sur; Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3, and the traditional “We Shall Overcome.” The concert will be broadcast to nearly 250 radio stations across the country on American Public Media’s Performance Today, hosted by Fred Child, on Monday, January 18, 2010. NEA Jazz Masters Concert To Be Broadcast Live on January 12th

WBGO Jazz 88.3FM will broadcast the 2010 NEA Jazz Masters Awards Ceremony & Concert taking place on Tuesday, January 12 at 7:30PM in the Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center at Broadway at 60th Street. The performance will feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in a program dedicated to the 2010 honorees’ works.
Joining the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra will be many of the honorees themselves including Muhal Richard Abrams, Bill Holman (as guest conductor), Annie Ross, and Cedar Walton. Also featured will be 2010 Jazz Master Kenny Barron on solo piano and 2010 Jazz Master Yusef Lateef with percussionist Adam Rudolph. George Avakian will receive the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Masters Award for Jazz Advocacy.

Wynton Marsalis to perform fan appreciation concert in New York City

Wynton Marsalis will give back to his fans as he opens the doors of Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center on November 29th, 2009. More than 100 fans will be invited to join Marsalis and his quintet as they take the stage for this once-in-a-lifetime performance. Ornette Coleman makes his Jazz at Lincoln Center concert debut to open the 2009-10 season on September 26. For one night only, Coleman and his two bass band perform inventive compositions that continue to influence generations of jazz musicians. The band includes Ornette Coleman (alto saxophone, trumpet, violin), his son Denardo Coleman (drums), Anthony Falanga (acoustic bass), and Al McDowell (electric bass). After five decades of creating music for free jazz ensembles, large-scale symphonies and pop-style electric bands, Ornette Coleman remains one of the most celebrated names in jazz.
