…implicit memory, a form of memory that is not recalled consciously. Implicit memory is responsible not only for simple perceptual and motor skills but also, in principle, for the pirouettes of Margot Fonteyn, the trumpeting technique of Wynton Marsalis, the accurate ground strokes of Andre Agassi, and the leg movements of an adolescent riding a bicycle. Hurricane Katrina: The Storm That Changed America is a collection of photographs and essays by the staff and editors of the respected news magazine, Time.
The book is organized in a day-by-day chronology of the storm, from the time it swiped south Florida until its devastating landfall in Louisiana and Mississippi, and Time’s writers tell the story of the storm in their reports from the scene.
Among the essays is an introduction from Wynton, who reminds readers that “New Orleans has a habit of tweaking the national consciousness at pivotal times,” citing the city’s importance during the War of 1812 and the Civil War, as well as its role in the struggle for racial equality.
