Wynton Marsalis wins NAACP Image Award for outstanding jazz album

March 4, 2010  - 5 Comments

Wynton Marsalis’ celebrated 2009 Blue Note Records release, He and She, was awarded the NAACP’s Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album during their February 26th ceremonies at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Released in March 2009, He and She is about that eternally compelling and most elemental of subjects - the relationship between a man and a woman. The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, trumpeter, and bandleader’s fifth Blue Note release is a unique and ambitious effort, combining spoken word and music. Marsalis notes, “On He and She, it’s a man talking, but the person who delivers the universal truth of the matter is a woman.”
Celebrating their 41st annual awards ceremony, the NAACP Image Awards is the nation’s premier event recognizing the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts (motion picture, television, recording, and literature), as well as those individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavors.

The Gold Medal of Vitoria

July 23, 2009  - 2 Comments

Address delivered by Francisco Javier Lazcoz Baigorri, Mayor of Vitoria, on July 19th, 2009, in awarding Wynton Marsalis the gold medal of Vitoria.

Welcome to Monterhomoso. Welcome to the capital of the Basque country and to its medieval quarter. Today we are going to pay the utmost tribute that a city can make to a person who has the goodness to spread the name of Vitoria-Gasteiz around the world, with the help of one of the most beautiful expressions that human beings possess: that of creativity converted into music. And we do this by awarding the city’s Gold Medal - our most coveted distinction. We have chosen this vestibule because it is the most noble place in which we are to perform a ritual for which all words are superfluous, and where all we can do is express our admiration and affection.

Our brother Ellis “commanded” the stage

June 17, 2009  - 6 Comments

The Duke Ellington Jazz Festival presented my father with a lifetime achievement award on Monday night. The festival touches all corners of Washington, DC from the spacious outside mall to small neighborhood restaurants and clubs and the venerated concert stages of the Kennedy Center. Almost our entire family was there, all the brothers, wives and children.

We were determined to put aside all familial dysfunction and make a concerted effort to show how much genuine love and respect we have for both our parents. The concert went much better than it had any right to. We told stories about growing up and all the funny and crazy things that happened or were said. We played tunes that were important to our father at different times in his life. Jason whistled all kinds of fantastic perfectly in tune, tonal arabesques’ on “Donna Lee”.

On May 17, Wynton is presenting award to Agnes Varis for the 6th annual Jazz Foundation Gala at Apollo Theatre.
The benefit concert will raise money to assist the countless elder jazz and blues artists in crisis across America, who have spent their lives making ours rich with their music.
