Jazz at Lincoln Center promotes cultural and artistic exchange with JLCO residency in Cuba
Jazz at Lincoln Center promotes cultural and artistic exchange with American and Cuban jazz musicians by producing events in Havana, Cuba and New York City in October. At the invitation of the Cuban Institute of Music, Jazz at Lincoln will bring its Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis (JLCO) to Havana for a residency on October 5-9. Later in the month, Jazz at Lincoln Center will produce the Afro-Cuban Jazz Celebration featuring concerts and a cultural expo at its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City October 21-23.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra residency will mark the first time the world-renowned big band performs in Cuba. The residency events will include concerts featuring the JLCO performing with Chucho Valdés and Cuban musicians; workshops and a Jazz for Young People® concert.
“A rich legacy of great jazz music has been created through the cross pollinization of American and Cuban musics. From early New Orleans to the music of Chucho Valdés, these bloodlines have maintained and nourished. We are excited to share performances with both Cuban and American audiences. This is our first residency in Cuba and we can’t wait,” said Wynton Marsalis, Artistic Director, Jazz at Lincoln Center.

IN NEW YORK OCTOBER 21-23:
Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Afro-Cuban Celebration will take place throughout Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City. Jazz Meets Clave, on October 21-23 at 8pm in Rose Theater, features the JLCO demonstrating how the godfather of Afro-Cuban music, Mario Bauza, along with his fellow countrymen – Bebo Valdés, Machito, Chano Pozo, and Cachao – turned Cubans on to American jazz while introducing Afro-Cuban clave and its intricate polyrhythms to Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Nat King Cole, and other American jazz musicians. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will explore the enduring legacy of these Afro-Cuban pioneers.
Ticket prices for Rose Theater are $10, $30, $50, $75, $95 or $120 dependent upon seating section. Note: Hot Seats, $10 orchestra level seats for each Rose Theater performance (excluding Jazz For Young People concerts), are available for purchase to the general public on the Wednesday of each performance week. IN NEW YORK OCTOBER 22-23:
Chucho Valdés and the Afro-Cuban Messengers will perform in The Allen Room on October 22-23 at 7:30pm & 9:30pm. Valdés will perform tracks from his new album Chucho’s Steps. The concerts at Jazz at Lincoln Center, in addition to other appearances during his October 2010 tour, marks Valdés return to the U.S. for the first time in 7 years. Chucho Valdés, son of Bebo Valdés, is a living embodiment of Afro-Cuban jazz history and the torchbearer of the current state of the art worldwide. His unique style combines straight-ahead virtuosity with exquisitely elegant balladry. Adding even more sabor are the fiery, award-winning Afro-Cuban Messengers.
Ticket prices for The Allen Room are $55 and $65.
Tickets for the Afro-Cuban Jazz Celebration concerts can be purchased through jalc.org or CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, open daily from 10am to 9pm. Tickets can also be purchased at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Box Office, located on Broadway at 60th Street, ground floor. Box Office hours: Monday-Saturday from 10am to 6pm (or 30 minutes past curtain) and Sunday from noon to 6pm (or 30 minutes past curtain).
Ticket holders are invited to a cultural expo in the Atrium, nightly beginning at 6:30pm. The cultural expo will will honor the sounds, smells, tastes and sights of Latino and Hispanic-inspired culture with a free performance by the Harbor Latin Youth Ensemble and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola Cuban sandwiches filled with slow roasted pork loin and oven baked ham, Katchkie Farm pickle relish and whole grain mustardprovided by Great Performances.
