HBO releases trailer for their new series “Treme”, featuring a selection from “Congo Square

March 19, 2010  - Video

Ever since HBO’s critically acclaimed masterpiece ‘The Wire’ went off the air two years ago, fans have been waiting to see what creators David Simon and Eric Overmyer would come up with next.
So when word came out that they were going to take on one of the most complicated issues in the country — the effort to rebuild New Orleans in the aftermath of 2005’s devastating Hurricane Katrina — fans and pundits alike were both intrigued by the idea and dismayed at the wait for the project to actually materialize. Could the team from ‘The Wire’ find their magic again? And, if so, could even they do the subject matter justice?

Well, the long wait is over, and judging by HBO’s new trailer for ‘Treme’ (premiering Apr. 11), we have our answers: yes, and yes. In just a brief 97 seconds, HBO has managed to raise anticipation for ‘Treme’ to a whole new level — all without revealing a single word of dialogue. Instead, accompanied by a perfectly chosen soundtrack (from Wynton Marsalis and Yacub Addy’s ‘Congo Square’ project), we get shots of the principal actors (including ‘The Wire’s’ Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters, as well as John Goodman, Steve Zahn and Melissa Leo) and, more importantly, a sense of the powerful style and soul of the show.

Love it, love it, love IT! My husband got me hooked on The Wire and after we recently finished watching its final season, I went straight to the computer to see what other projects the writers were working on. That`s how I discovered Treme.

New Orleans has long been on my list of places I`d like to see before I die. My own personal associations to the city are pretty tenuous, but still…music is a big part of it.

My mother had a brief career as a singer in the 40s and passed on her love of music (and the Inkspots) to me. She visited New Orleans in the early 1950s. Back then she was working at an American base in Greenland where she met a dashing serviceman from Texas. He swept her away to New Orleans for a weekend. They visited the My oh My Club, which my mother remembered as being very exciting…not only for the music, but also for the moment she realized that one of the very beautiful women sitting at their table was, in fact, a transvestite.

I think that weekend helped make her much more accepting of the world`s diversity than many others of her generation.

And now, after watching the first few episodes of Treme, my hope to one day visit that same city…well, let`s say it won`t be just a `hope` for long.
