Wynton Marsalis Quintet Releases New Live Recording Featuring Richard Galliano

August 26, 2009  - CD

Those fans who gathered in large numbers under Marciac’s great jazz tent in France last summer came to hear celebrated trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the much-loved accordionist Richard Galliano unveil their collaboration on the music of Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf. Recorded live at the 2008 Marciac Jazz Festival, the music was contemporary yet timeless, with each song exploring the travails of living.

This album, From Billie Holiday to Edith Piaf – Live in Marciac, is perhaps best described as the fusion of two passions rather than simply a meeting of great talent.
The result is a concert consisting of: A La Foule, Padam…Padam, L’Homme à la moto, along with Them There Eyes, Sailboat in the Moonlight, What a Little Moonlight Can Do and Billie, composed by Richard Galliano.
Three of the highlights of the evening are a poignant Strange Fruit, which is, without a doubt, the best instrumental version ever played followed by a truly inspired La Vie en Rose.  These alone make the album a must have.
The seemingly effortless arrangements performed by the dynamic Wynton Marsalis Quintet are pushed further by its members, each an accomplished soloist in his own right.  Joining Wynton in his group are Walter Blanding on the tenor saxophone, pianist Dan Nimmer, bassist Carlos Henriquez and Ali Jackson on the drums.
The excellence of the two leaders demonstrates the struggle towards an elusive virtue among limitless musical paths, proving there is no single destination in the genre, just a fleeting and happily shared experience of two great minds.  Each in his own milieu, their unified experience is magically captured on this recording.

Is there a site in English where I can purchase this album? I don’t speak French, so it is very difficult to manage the link above…

Is it available in the USA or as MP3 anywhere?

The link takes you to the site store… you need to alter the web address to go to the HOME page. In tiny black print under a red(?)menu box, you can change the language to English. The CD price is 15 euros, shipping to the US is an additional 20 euros. The online store also requires you to acknowledge the terms and conditions. There may not be an English version of this since attempting to read it gave me a blank screen.

I’m hoping that there will be some way to buy this from a store in the U.S. It costs 15 euros plus 20 euros to ship it to the U.S. This brings it to 35 euros which is equivalent to $50 U.S. dollars!! That’s a lot for one CD.
