Wynton to play Red Hot Holiday Stomp at JALC

Tune in to PBS on Monday, December 10 at 8:00 p.m.* for Live From Lincoln Center’s telecast of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s (JALC) annual holiday concert, Red Hot Holiday Stomp, from Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in Frederick P. Rose Hall. The broadcast will be hosted by five-time Academy Award-nominated film and stage actress Glenn Close, and feature Wynton Marsalis leading an evening of joyous music and storytelling. Joining him for Red Hot Holiday Stomp are Wycliffe “Pinecone” Gordon, Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Victor Goines, Joe Temperley, “Papa” Don Vappie, Reginald Veal, Dan Nimmer and Herlin Riley, who will bring Big Easy-style holiday cheer to the Big Apple…

In the first part of the program the musicians will devote themselves to Christmas Carols, other Holiday favorites and New Orleans standards. The entire second half will consist of a nearly hour-long recent work by Wynton titled “Music, Deep Rivers in My Soul.” (Watch to the Quintet rehearsing this poem in Marciac 2007).

Its point of departure is a poetic text by Maya Angelou and it is set for a jazz quintet with a speaker and a dancer. The format echoes Stravinsky’s “L’Histoire du Soldat,” but unlike the Stravinsky/Ramuz story of a soldier who makes a pact with the devil, the Marsalis/Angelou work is a portrait of black music, those who create it and those who listen to it. Wynton’s score embodies a kaleidoscopic amalgam of blues, Gospel, funeral marches, spirituals, swing and bebop.

Speaking the lines of the Angelou poem will be S. Epatha Merkerson, the actress who will instantly be recognized as the precinct police lieutenant in the extraordinary television series Law and Order. The dancer, who created a sensation at a performance of the piece last April, will be tap dancer Jared Grimes.

Red Hot Holiday Stomp with Wynton Marsalis and Friends airs Monday, December 10, 2007. Check Local Listings to see when it is airing on your local PBS station. The show will also be rebroadcast on Saturday December 15 at 3pm and 8pm.

On December 6-7-8, the Red Hot Holiday Stomp will take place at Rose Hall. More info about tickets on JALC web site

I just watched “Accent on the Off Beat”. Herlin Riley says in there that he likes to play for dancers. Let’s check him out with Jared Grimes on Tap! This is first for that team.

Yesss!!! Finally another live PBS telecast of Wynton and the boys! Are there any plans to release any of the music from this show on CD? I still wish they would release the James Black special Wynton did several years ago.

I just returned from my first trip to NY and on Friday night had the pleasure of seeing, and hearing, Wynton and friends perform at the Red Hot Holiday Stomp.

It was a wonderful concert in an incredible setting, and it topped off a week of New York experiences. What a great town!

I just finished watching the concert and last week i watched your iconoclast episode.

Time has stood the test that Mr. Marsalis is the ultimate Blues and Jazz master.

I got to know a little about you about 15 years ago before my divorce. I’m watching you on KSPS at The Lincoln Center on ch.7 in Spokane and I can see you are still on top! THE BEST!! Thank you, A. M.

The banjo player is Don Vappie as listed above. I heard Wynton say last night that he had been in the hospital the last couple of days. It was wonderful to see him on the bandstand swingin’! It was also good to see Wess looking quite healthy as well.

I learned of a dear friend’s Dad passing away last night, and I just wanted you to know how soothing it was to listen to that beautiful music and dancing. I lit candles in my home and listened and prayed. God Bless You.

This will be a Christmas classic! Two bands in one show. A great gift to public television. And what a fine tap dancer Jared is! An interesting concept of arts integration; his ’stage’ was so small for a dancer, yet the choreography was so versatile and unhindered… syncopated feet adding a new element to the percussion section. The score and poem combined to make a perfect fit, beautifully performed.

Really enjoyed all Christmas arrangements. Music students often tend to swing Carol of the Bells (to the teacher’s chagrin), but it does sound good that way!

Both Angelou’s commentary and lyrical poetry were thought provoking. ‘Adding to’ a musical creation is definitely the sign of a higher level of artistry. Best, Glo.

I finished rehearsal arrived home and the show was on! What a festive Jazzy treat! Thanks family! with teaching and performing myself I thought I would not be able to see the show. CJD,

Who had been in the hospital, Wynton or Don Vappie? Good to hear Wess is well and playing again. The broadcast did not air here in Atlanta and looks like it won’t in the next coming weeks. I’m thoroughly disappointed I did not get to see what sounds like a great show. Keep the details coming guys.

Don Vappie was in the hospital. Wynton and the rest of them were keeping vigil on his behalf.

WNET (NY) will re-broadcast Sunday, December 16th at 12 p.m. Luigi, I was unable to additional times because the PBS stations are independently scheduled, and published two weeks in advance.

Kathleen, keep us informed about the polyphonic Nutcracker! I’m listening to Such Sweet Thunder, impressed by Duke’s take on literary themes, from Shakespeare to programmatic ballets! Music, Deep Rivers in My Soul combines syncopated, lyric poetry with a contemporary edge. Glo.

On behalf of Jared Grimes family, we thank you for being such a class act and for including my cousin Jared in on such a classy, memorable performance. His mother requested that I relay her utmost thanks and gratitude to you and to PLEASE make a visit to North Carolina real soon!

I’ll see you at your next show!

    Love and Blessings-NS

I stumbled across the Holiday Stomp on TBS last night and, having not heard anything about it, decided to watch… Absolutely amazing. And the tap? Oh man… Just the whole deal… Excellent gig, Wynton. I was completely captivated… Watched the entire show wire to wire, and all I kept thinking was, “Man, I wish I was there…”

    Merry Christmas!

PS- During the last song of the first set, I could almost taste the Crawfish Etouffee and the Red Beans and Rice! Thanks for bringing me back to the Crescent…

Speaking of the show I can’t to see the whole show! We are having 12 inches of snow Sunday and it will be great seeing the entire performance which is always never the same even though I have personally seen them perform as a group before! And it is always Great.

I said to one person in the Marsalis family’”Man you have mastered your instrument!” and he said, “if I master it then what is there left for me to learn?” I will never fully master my instrument! What do you guys think of this statement?

I absolutely loved the red hot holiday stomp it was not only entertaining but a history lesson on the relationship between african americans and the sounds of our music’s background. PBS in my area aired it at 3am and I have 4 children who I wish could have seen it and I hope it becomes available for sale some day (hint)!! We need more programs like this to uplift our people and our society as a whole. Thank you
