I love the Ruby Diamond Auditorium, the plaza and the fountain in front are beautiful. Fountains always make me happy.

Great news! Marcus Roberts’ Rhapsody In Blue performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center with American Composers Orchestra and J@LCO was phenomenal. His approach to Gershwin blended the traditional jazz age piano score with contemporary, creative cadenzas and improvisations. Hope he and Wynton will collaborate more often, carving out new pathways- sculpted in both traditional and futuristic designs- for the art of jazz.

We can find the Gershwin on http://www.jalc.org in the radio archives. Is it Rhapsody in Manhattan? I saw it live on Saturday night that weekend. That was the best Rhapsody in Blue I’ve heard, and those strings could swing.

The last recording of Wynton and J-Master together? You would have to go back a ways for anything significant. I know Marcus played solos on Marciac Suite as well as Citi Movement. You may have to go all the way back to “Levee Low Moan” for an entire album; it’s been a long time to say the least.

Wynton and the J-Master together again. What could be better? Since I can’t be there I’ll just have to listen to some Live at Blues Alley.

By the way, Wynton’s show with the JALC Orchestra last week in Austin was amazing. I had not seen them in some time, and there is some great new talent in the group.

I still chuckle when I hear Wynton talk about how much he doesn’t like to fly. I wonder how many miles a year he logs traveling to gigs around the world. I could see 100,000 being realistic.

    i’d love to hear that
i just wrote a letter which appeared in the uk national newspaper ‘The Times’ defending marcus against some bigoted music professor who didn’t like marcus’ interpretation of ‘rhapsody in blue’
    hope the gig goes well
