The guys in the quintet were joined that night by an actress reciting Maya Angelou’s poetry and a tap dancer, Jared Grimes. Mr. Grimes debuted last June, 2006 at the Dizzy’s club coca cola “Recording Workshop” that the group had for a first hearing of the material for Wynton’s new cd. Mr. Marsalis spent an hour or so discussing rhythmic structures with Mr. Grimes after dancing this past New Years with the quartet at Dizzy’s.

Grimes opened with an African style dance solo at the May 10th benefit show and proceded to lay down his rhythms all over his boards of the stage at the Rose. It’s looks as though Mr. Grimes may be a “shoe in” for upcoming shows with the group, he’s dancing at Marciac.
