It's so interesting to read about or listen to composers describing the genesis of their works. I'm just at the first stage of studying this new recording. While the cultural statements are clear, I hope listeners will not over-look, but also appreciate, the ingenuity of the part-writing of the music in and of itself. Jennifer Sanon's vocals are outstanding. She has developed a singular style. In the interplay of the horns, the instruments are woven seamlessly together. The harmonies and contours of the melodic lines are modernist yet accessible. American culture is at a crossroads, and this recording presents an accurate picture of where we are.
