    Maybe Wynton’s concert in LA on Monday didn’t “soar”, but Friday night for the group of young jazzers — and me — who saw his performance in Orange County, “soar” is a good word. Maybe not to the critics, who said about Friday’s performance that he doesn’t “expand his boundries” or something along those lines, but to the five high school jazz musicians who listened with me that night and got the opportunity to meet him backstage after the show (http://www.flickr.com/photos/wyntonmarsalis/), Wynton went a long way towards keeping jazz alive in the younger generation.

    Thanks for the update! The critic agreed the music was swinging; the musical message simply “soared” right over his head!!
