Wynton at The Juilliard School 100th Anniversary Gala tonight

April 3, 2006  - Concerts, TV show

The Juilliard School will mark its 100th anniversary tonight in a gala performance starring former students including conductor-composer John Williams, soprano Renée Fleming, actor Kevin Kline, Wynton Marsalis, violinist Itzhak Perlman, and pianist Emanuel Ax.

The event will be broadcast on the PBS program Live From Lincoln Center starting at 8 p.m. (check local listings).

The famed Juilliard alumni will perform alongside the Juilliard String Quartet and a lineup of current students, including 13-year-old pianist Peng Peng, the Juilliard Orchestra, and the Juilliard Dance Ensemble. Soprano Leontyne Prince will speak.

The program includes works by Brahms and Rachmaninoff as well as New England Triptych by composer William Schuman, a onetime Juilliard president; an excerpt from a new dance work by Adam Hougland set to music by Christopher Rouse; an excerpt from Williams’ score for Schindler’s List; and Marsalis’s The Holy Ghost.

For the latter work, a jazz group including trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and reed player Victor Goines, the director of Juilliard’s jazz studies program, will join Marsalis.

Kline will perform a scene with an ensemble of Juilliard drama students.

Is there a recording of the piece played on the 100th anniversary show today, a jazz piece?

I think you are talking about “Free to Be.” Although Wynton didn’t play during the show, this recording is on his “The Magic Hour” cd.

my name is sharon johnson and i have been a board of ed teacher for 15 years. some colleagues and i have seen that there is not a hint of the arts anywhere in harlem near our school, which is located on 113 street. family academy(ps241) is a typical harlem that lacks any extracurricular activity, except broadway juniors, which has been implemented this year. for years, parents have asked me to teach their child violin and piano. at first, i thought about renting a room in an office building and working from there. but why can’t there be a school that has academics in the morning, and the arts in the afternoon, with optional classes on the weekend? drama, piano, music history, strings, movement? our children are talented and neeed an outlet.
mr. marsalis, i would like for my “dream” for this community to come true with your help. i would like to get this school started, but have no funding, yet have the staff ready to get it started. i know that you are heavily involved with children learning to appreciate the arts and know that this idea could thrive with your endorsement. please let me know if you are interested in ehlping our students in the harlem community. thank you!!
