Wynton to perform in Tulane University

January 12, 2006  - Concerts, Speech

Wynton will appear on the Tulane University campus on Martin Luther King Day to help celebrate the reopening of Tulane, Xavier, Dillard and Loyola universities, all forced to forgo their fall semesters due to damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina.
He will deliver a keynote speech about the cultural rebirth of the city followed immediately by a concert that is free and open to the public. The event takes place in McAlister Auditorium on Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.

“The visit by this world-class musician and humanitarian embodies the unity of our four universities on a day that not only honors one of America’s greatest figures but also marks the rebirth of higher education in the city of New Orleans,” said Tulane President Scott Cowen.

I would just like to say that I went to this presentation tonight and it was quite frankly one of the best experiences of my life. Mr. Marsalis is an amazing speaker- extremely passionate and moving. And his jazz is just as good. I really hope to come across a transcript of his speech, becuase it is something I will want to read over and over again and that I feel everyone in this country could benefit from hearing.

The speech sounds incredible. It would be amazing if anyone can get audio or a transcript for the website. Thanks.

I, too, had the privilege of hearing Mr. Marsalis’ speech at Tulane last night. This morning I searched not only the local news venues, but the web for any mention of this amazingly stirring call to action in the name of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but find none.

I also attended this presentation. I heard what I expect is the best live speech I will ever hear, followed by one of the best live performances I will ever hear. I could go on, but I’m actually just posting a link to the text of the speech as written. It should be noted that this is not a transcript of the speech as delivered; it was even better with his impromptu additions. I can only hope that Tulane will post up a recording. http://www2.tulane.edu/marsalis011606.cfm
