You know, I could have used some more of the “stomp” promosed by the adverstisements for the concert. The concert was lovely, the music was sublime but I have come to expect that of the musicians who perform at Jazz. The concert lacked energy…the four-hands piano was OUTSTANDING and Temperly gave a few incredible solos but overall I could have easily fallen asleep. Mr. Marsalis is a romantic on the keyboard, or at least he was during the performance I saw, and the group swayed toward this tendancy rather than “swung” toward euphoria. Loved them all but the “bells, baby, bells” promo geared me up for a level of excitement and holiday cheer that was absent from this show.

So I would have been disappointed Jurzy had I attended the concert? When I first received my JALC events calendar, I saw the holiday stomp advertisement and immediately my thoughts ran to people dancing in the aisles “New Orleans style” to the music. I wanted to take my niece thinking it would be a festive event. Alas, I was invited on a trip to Rome, Italy and Italy won out. Sure I would have liked to attend the Stomp with my niece, however from your review and what I read in the New York Times, I would have probably been disappointed as well.

Sonalii, you would have been very disappointed. NOT WITH THE MUSIC, of course, but with the general lack of enthusiasm…it was not festive or fun or lively. I wanted to dance in the aisles too! I wanted a celebration, you know?! The promos had me all excited about a celebration. Your trip to Italy was best and I hope you enjoyed it tremendously!!!

Jurzy,
Italy was wonderful and I am anxiously looking forward to returning this spring. I’m sure the music at the stomp was excellent as Wynton never seems to disappoint.
