Wynton plays in Moacir Santos’ new CD
Moacir Santos, born to a poor family in Pernambuco (northeastern Brazil, ) is regarded as a walking encyclopedia in the realm of Brazilian instrumental music.
His new album, entitled Choros and Alegria, counts with the participation of Wynton, who taking opportunity of a concert he would give in São Paulo, insisted in participating of the recording of Choros & Alegria.
The song Rota Infinita, a jazz-waltz launched by Moacir in the 70ies, was included here exclusively for Wynton to participate. Mario Adnet made the arrangements for the entire band.
Wynton compared Moacir to Thelonius Monk and Beethoven for his ingenuity, and to Duke Ellington because of his orchestral neatness. He added that, like very few others, this Brazilian composer and maestro, knows how to combine European music with its African roots and with the liberty of jazz.

I just love wynton’s music so much. Being a Brazilian, I always loved the instrumental music of my country, as inventive and beautiful as jazz, yet so different. It was really touching for me to see Marsalis and Moacir Santos in the same recording. It’s like the two worlds I live in get together to became a wider one, greener and more opened to different sounds. It really made me feel like we are all brothers.
