Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Concert
Jazz at Lincoln Center announced plans to produce the Higher Ground Hurricane Relief Benefit Concert on Saturday, September 17 at 7pm at Rose Theater in Frederick P. Rose Hall on Broadway at 60th Street in New York City. The concert will seek to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Bill Cosby will host the concert with Wynton Marsalis, Peter Cincotti, Elvis Costello, Paquito D’Rivera, Abbey Lincoln, Diana Krall, Jon Hendricks and more tba.
XM Satellite Radio will carry this concert live on their network from coast to coast on channel 70, the Real Jazz channel. Higher Ground will also be broadcast live via radio partner WBGO Jazz88.3FM in the New York City area and offered nationally and internationally via National Public Radio and its 807 member stations in the US, NPR Worldwide, and streamed live on www.npr.org, www.wbgo.org, www.xmradio.com More broadcast information to follow. Concert tickets will be available beginning on September 8th at the Jazz at Lincoln Center box office at Broadway at 60th St., by calling CenterCharge at (212) 721-6500 or via www.jalc.org CenterCharge service fees will be donated to hurricane relief efforts. Ticket prices are $50, $100, $500, $1000, $5000, $10,000.

Dear Wynton, I saw you tonight on CNN.You said what is on all of our minds. The whole world saw the suffering in new orleans as did I.No one could ever convince me that water,pedialyte for those babies, juice,diapers, fruit,some peanut butter sandwiches couldn’t have been dropped by helicopter at the super dome and other locations before it was to relieve those people.I share the same ethnic background as most of the victims at the super dome. call it psychic memory or maybe it is in our dna but i,like you know the face of racism when i see it. i am proud of how you stood up and let the world know that the response was slow and deadly. i went online http://www.shareyourhome and asked if I can help a young single mother with an infant by having them live with me.we have to help our own because there by the grace of God go I.

I watched all of Higher Ground on Saturday. It was a true testament to New Orleans, I would like to know the name of the first song you played as you came on to the stage, and if I can get a recording of it.

Is there any source for DVD of the Higher Ground concert boradcast in its entirety? Proceeds could go to the hurricane fund. I long to see/hear the poetry readings by the various performers again (and again).
It was a spellbinding event aiding a mindbending, heartwrenching disaster. Don’t let it be lost.
