Jazz In Motion: World Premieres by Wynton Marsalis
Guaranteed kinetic energy takes place on the stage of the Rose Theater on November 3, 4, 5 at 8pm with Jazz In Motion.
Welcome, composed by Wynton Marsalis and choreographed by Peter Martins, is performed by Charles McPherson and a New York City Ballet dancer.
Visionary Elizabeth Streb and her dance company STREB debut Gauntlet, with new music by Joe Chambers and his percussion ensemble. Tap genius Savion Glover and his ensemble ignite the stage in the evening’s final world premiere to new music composed by Wynton.
Reprises include past Wynton collaborations with Tony Award-winner Garth Fagan and New York City Ballet’s Peter Martins. The Wynton Marsalis Septet and Garth Fagan Dance will illuminate the stage, performing excerpts from Fagan’s critically acclaimed Griot New York and Trips & Trysts.
The New York City Ballet will perform Jazz (Six Syncopated Movements) with the LCJO and Wynton Marsalis.
“Jazz is dance!” Wynton explains. “Many of the classic compositions in jazz included the actual names of dance steps, such as New Orleans Bump, One O’Clock Jump, Stompin’ at the Savoy and Jitterbug Waltz. Ultimately, jazz musicians strive to cut diamond-elegant rhythms on the perpetually changing hardwood grooves of bass, drums and piano. In earlier times, cultural ignorance kept dance companies from embracing jazz music and rhythms. Now we are entering an exciting new age where the genres of jazz and dance are working in greater and greater harmony.”
